5 Signs Your Website Is Costing You Customers

20 Jun 2026 · 2 min read

It's easy to assume an old website is a harmless website - it's still there, still technically working, so why worry about it? In practice, a weak website doesn't just sit there neutrally. It actively pushes potential customers toward whichever competitor has a better one. Here are five signs worth taking seriously.

It's not usable on a phone. Most visitors to a small business site are on their phone, often while standing outside the shop or mid-conversation with a friend. If the site doesn't resize properly, makes them pinch-zoom to read anything, or hides the phone number below three scrolls, they'll often just move on to the next search result instead of fighting with it.

It's slow to load. A few extra seconds doesn't sound like much, but on mobile data, it's the difference between someone waiting and someone leaving. Slow sites also tend to rank worse in Google search, which means fewer people find them in the first place.

There's no clear way to take action. A visitor should be able to tell within a few seconds how to book, order, or get in touch - not have to hunt for a phone number buried in a paragraph. If the "next step" isn't obvious, most people won't look for it; they'll just leave.

It looks noticeably outdated. Design trends move, and a site that looked current five years ago can now read as neglected - which quietly signals that the business itself might not be actively run either, even when that's not remotely true.

It can't do what the business actually needs. A restaurant that still can't take online orders, or a clinic that still requires a phone call to book anything, is leaving convenience - and customers who prefer convenience - on the table.

None of these are reasons to panic, but they are reasons to take a second look at a site that's been running untouched for a while. Often, the fix isn't starting from zero - it's a redesign around what's actually not working.
