Why Your Small Business Needs a Real Website, Not Just a Social Media Page

A lot of small businesses we talk to already have some kind of online presence - an Instagram page, a WhatsApp Business number, maybe a Google listing. That's a good start, and it's better than nothing. But it's not the same as having a website, and the difference matters more than it looks.

When your only presence is a social media page, you're building on rented land. The platform decides what your page can look like, how your posts get shown (or don't), and whether people can even find you without already following you. Change the algorithm, and your reach changes with it - nothing you did wrong, just a rule you don't control.

A website is different. It's the one place online that's actually yours. You decide what it says, how it looks, and what happens when someone lands on it - browse your menu, check your prices, book a slot, or just call you directly. It works the same way at 2am as it does at 2pm, and it shows up in Google search results when someone nearby searches for exactly what you offer - something a social media page rarely does well.

There's also a trust angle that's easy to underestimate. When a potential customer is deciding between you and a competitor, and one of you has a proper website while the other only has a social page, the website reads as more established - even if both businesses are the same size. It's a small signal, but it adds up.

None of this means you should drop social media - it's genuinely useful for daily updates and reaching people who already know you. The point is that it works best alongside a website, not instead of one. The website is where new customers land and decide to trust you; social media is where existing customers stay in touch.
